🌊The Lamb Gang, Greenpeace & the Big Ocean Treaty. Let’s Save the Sargasso Sea!

Have you ever imagined a place in the ocean where sea creatures drift between floating rainforests of seaweed? That’s the Sargasso Sea, and it’s a special, magical home to turtles, baby fish, eels, and so many more.

But right now, the Sargasso Sea is unprotected, which means it’s vulnerable to harm from fishing, pollution, and climate change.

🌊 What Greenpeace Is Doing

Greenpeace is taking action to make sure the Sargasso Sea is safe, and here’s how:

  • They’re gathering signatures on an open letter asking world leaders to establish the Sargasso Sea as a protected ocean sanctuary.

  • Their activists sail through the sea (on ships like the Arctic Sunrise) to study the marine life there and show everyone how important this place is.

  • They’re pushing governments to support a powerful new treaty, one that can protect oceans across the globe, not just near land.

📃 The Global Oceans Treaty: A Big Deal for the High Seas

You might have seen it: Greenpeace talks about the Global Oceans Treaty. This is a really important international agreement that can help protect parts of the ocean that are far from land, places like the Sargasso Sea.

Here are a few things to know:

  • It allows for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in international waters (areas beyond any country’s border).

  • It sets rules for assessing environmental impact before large ocean projects (like deep-sea mining) are allowed.

  • It includes fair sharing of benefits from marine genetic resources (like the microscopic creatures we might use in medicine) and helps build capacity and technology for countries that need support.

  • The treaty helps make the goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030 (the “30×30” target) more possible.

But, and this is important, for the treaty to officially come into force, at least 60 nations must ratify it (i.e., formally approve it in their own laws). Greenpeace is urging all countries to ratify it quickly, so that the protections can start working in places like the Sargasso Sea.

✍️ How You Can Help (Yes, you can!)

  1. Sign the open letter with your family ➤ Click here to sign

  2. Tell your classmates, friends, or teacher about the Sargasso Sea, share the link or this blog post.

  3. Draw, write, or imagine a sea creature or ocean story, and share it online or in your school.

  4. Watch the ocean treaty progress - you can check which countries have ratified the Global Oceans Treaty and call on others to join.

💫 Why It Matters to Me (and to You)

In my stories, I believe animals, nature, and places like the ocean deserve voices. The Lamb Gang and I believe that words, combined with real-world action, can protect creatures that can’t speak for themselves.

By supporting Greenpeace’s petition and by championing the Global Oceans Treaty, we help make sure that places like the Sargasso Sea (and all of our oceans) have legal protection, safe homes, and room to heal.
